A few weeks ago we launched our next phase trial for the treatment of Chronic Kidney Disease in Cats using Photobiomodulation (aka Red Light Therapy or Laser Therapy). We have received many inquiries from pet owners interested in enrolling their pets in this study. This trial is different than our previous work in that it exclusively utilizes in home, owner applied Light Therapy with a standardized device. It has become clear during the enrollment process that many felines are improperly designated to be in a particular IRIS stage of kidney disease, http://www.iris-kidney.com/ due to insufficient laboratory evaluation. It is important that in every pet that is suspected of Chronic Kidney Disease, blood work including at minimum; Creatinine, BUN, Phosphorous, SDMA and potassium be performed. Similarly a Complete Blood Count, Urinalysis and Urine Culture should also be part of the initial assessment. Furthermore, only if your pet is normally hydrated, can a stage be assigned. Chronic Kidney Disease staging includes the primary stage as well as the sub-stage which relates to blood pressure and urine protein.
