Update on Chronic Kidney Disease Study and Call for New Patients
Two months ago, MedcoVet in conjunction with Ron Hirschberg DVM, launched an innovative study using Red Light Therapy (Photobiomodulation or PBM) to assess whether there were improved outcomes of feline CKD patients when treated with PBM. Dr. Hirschberg has been studying the use of Light Therapy to treat CKD for over a decade and first published a Pilot Study in 2016. His findings showed a significant improvement in the quality of lives of patients suffering from this all-too-common condition. Although his past work includes pets treated in clinic with or without at home therapy, this new study strictly includes pets treated at home ONLY with a Luma device from MedcoVet.
The initial group of participants have now been fully screened and entered into the study. Although it is too early to discuss results, several positive comments have come from pet parents. Overall, the majority of pet owners have found it “very easy to treat” their furry friend after an initial acclimation period. An “improvement in appetite” and “increased activity” are two of the most common cited changes since using Luma. One participant stated “I never thought I would see my girl run around like this again” one month after beginning treatment. We will continue to update the results including recent laboratory results as they become available. At this point we are quite encouraged by the direction the study.
Having fully processed all initial applicants we are now in position to again open enrollment for new additions to the study. If your feline or someone you know has a fuzzy friend diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease and would like to find out more, please click on this link:
Time is of the essence as the earlier a diagnosed patient begins treatment, the more beneficial Red-Light Therapy is likely to be in the treatment Feline Chronic Kidney Disease. If you have further questions regarding the study or enrollment, please contact Dr. Hirschberg @ [email protected]
